Getting a channel onto LG Channels

Smart-TV platforms are where most free streaming viewing now happens, and getting a channel onto one is less mysterious than it looks. It is three contracts and one operational problem — and the operational problem is the one that decides whether you make the launch date.

The pieces

  • A distribution agreement with the platform. Commercial, usually with a revenue share against the advertising sold in your hours, and usually with a launch date attached.
  • A playout partner — a channel origination service that runs your linear schedule, inserts advertising and delivers the signal. Amagi is one of the large ones; MediaBlaze delivers into its CLOUDPORT ingest.
  • Content you have the rights to distribute, in the territories the deal covers. Territory restrictions are handled with separate feeds per region where required.
  • A daily supply of material that passes ingest QC and carries the metadata the scheduler needs.

What catches people out

Not the contracts. The launch date. A distribution deal fixes a day the channel goes live, and from that point the schedule has to be filled every day forever — which is a different problem from producing a good pilot. Teams that comfortably make a launch reel discover that sustaining it is the actual job.

The second thing is QC. Platforms and their playout partners check what you deliver: technical conformance, and content problems like long runs of black or silence. A file that a consumer editor exported happily can be rejected for a scan type the probe cannot determine. Every rejection is a re-delivery, and near a launch date those compound.

The third is advertising. If your assets arrive without declared ad breaks, the platform's break automation has nothing to fire against and your hours carry no advertising — which is generally noticed only once the channel is live and the first revenue report is disappointing.

Where MediaBlaze sits

MediaBlaze is not a distribution deal and not a playout service. It is the part between your content rights and your playout partner: it takes agency wire video or your own footage, produces finished segments with script and voiceover, marks the ad breaks, checks the file against the platform's technical limits before you send, and delivers both the media and the metadata entry the scheduler reads.

It runs today behind a live sports and business news channel on LG Channels across seven European territories, delivering to Amagi CLOUDPORT.
